Subjects to in Punta Cana are the genuine sunshine experience of the Dominican Republic. Punta Cana is the major resort on the island and is renowned for its shimmering white sand beaches and vivid turquoise seas. Washed by both the Atlantic and Caribbean and enjoying the benefit of both, the resort is located on the island's easternmost tip. The holiday properties are beautifully laid out in low-rise design and many are surrounded by tropical foliage, lagoons and exotic birds.
Punta Cana gets its name from the many white cane palms in the area, lending the lovely landscape its lush setting and tropical feel. Situated close to the equator and with an average daily temperature of 30C, this idyllic climate is tailor made for waterporting activities. Scuba diving, snorkelling, windsurfing, sailing and boat trips are all on the agenda and the underwater world has marine life that is unbelievably rich and varied. The more slothful may just soak up the rays on the pristine stretches of dazzling icing sugar sand.
Shopping in the resort can be fun, but remember that you must bargain with the locals as you will be quoted some outrageous prices to start! Bottles of rum (white, amber or dark), locally grown coffee and basket wares are all great as souvenirs and will help to spend your Dominican peso. Beach peddlers may also be in evidence, but beware of buying any trinkets like coral or shell as these are injurious to the environment and may be illegal anyway.
A real Caribbean experience, Punta Cana holidays have that unique and exotic flavour that is exciting and fun. If you tire of the beach, you might be surprised that tthere are over 55 golf courses of international standard, designed by such luminaries as Jack Nicklaus and Nick Faldo. In fact, Punta Espada and Teeth of the Dog are amongst the top 50 courses in the world!
Some local landmarks worth visiting are Saona Island, set in the natural reserve of the Parque Nacional del Este where dolphins might join your swim; see Santo Domingo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and 1st European settlement of the Western Hemisphere or experience Bavaro Runners and visit real Dominican homes to see the scenery and lives of the Dominican Republic.
A holiday in Punta Cana is honeymoon heaven as the resort provides superb accommodation options and, of course, the natural surroundings are utterly beautiful and romantic. Imagine the golden orb of a setting sun dipping on the horizon whilst you relax on your balcony with a Caribbean cocktail....
