Destinations / Caribbean / Jamaica / Montego Bay
Jamaica holidays are full of colour, music and vibrancy and the island has one of the liveliest cultures in the whole Caribbean. The resort of Montego Bay, situated on Jamaica's north coast, is affectionately known to the locals as Mo'Bay and is the 2nd largest city after Kingston, the capital.
Montego Bay holidays are all about the beaches, the shopping and the fun. Of course, music in Jamaica is everywhere too and the legend that is Bob Marley brought reggae to a worldwide audience. Iconic songs like "Rivers of Babylon" and "No woman no Cry" seem to form an integral part of the landscape and those haunting melodies permeate throughout.
Lapped by the Caribbean sea, waters of dazzling turquoise blue and silvery sands make the beaches utterly alluring. Mo'Bay alone has several public beaches which are all easily accessible and well tended. Watersports enthusiasts can enjoy parasailing, wave runners and diving. Away from the lovely beaches, the bustling city centre offers great duty free shopping and, naturally, craft markets where local produce, artisan wares and fresh foodstuffs are displayed in colourful array. All of Caribbean life is on offer here!
Stop by a roadside shack, sip the local "Red Stripe" beer or cool rum punch and nibble on some delicious jerk chicken or pork. The town centre has lots of good restaurants, shops and bars, so there are plenty of options for strolling around and exploring Montego Bay at your leisure. There are excellent historical references too and Fort Montego is a must on the sightseeing list. The town's oldest monument, a trio of cannons pointing at the distant horizon are the last remains of this 16th century fort.
Enjoy your holiday in Montego Bay and perhaps think of visiting some of the other resorts on the island. Romantic Negril and lovely Ocho Rios are short drives away and well worth a trip. Also, plan to see the very famous Dunn's River Falls when you're on the island, raft down the Rio Grande or check out some of the delightful old Great Houses, like Rose Hall, which have been lovingly restored. You will be spoiled for choice on your Montego Bay holiday.
