Truly a global city, Geneva is home of the European HQ of the United Nations, headquarters of the International Red Cross and is a world centre for diplomacy.
The Geneva Conventions were signed here and, of course, the city is named due to its location on the banks of romantic Lake Geneva. A strategic situation where the river Rhone exits the lake, the city is cocooned between the mighty Alps to the west and the Jura mountains to the east. The snowy slopes and peak of Mt. Blanc are even visible in the distance.
Geneva hosts an enormous number of international fairs, congresses and conventions and has been described as the 3rd European financial centre. Although a big hitter in the business world, the city is compact and its many points of interest are easily accessible. Locals enjoy a great quality of life and outdoor pursuits take centre stage with such an abundance of natural amenities on the doorstep! Geneva is also the culinary capital of Switzerland and haute cuisine restaurants and traditional bistros provide excellent international and local dishes.
A landmark in the city is the startling "jet d'eau", a fountain jet of water that rises 140m, paying homage to Geneva's prowess in hydraulic power. Another symbolic feature is the stunning flower clock (whose colours change with the seasons) to mark the city's internationally renowned watch industry. Visit the Place du Bourg-de-Four, a square in the heart of the medieval old town, site of the Town hall and lots of trendy bars and street cafes; the Romanesque St. Peter's Cathedral and crypt; the United Nations building; Place Neuve, the cultural centre; the Reformation Wall commemorating Calvinism and The Paquis which is the "happening" place for bistros, bars, cafes and restaurants.
Situated in central Europe, Geneva is a city with very diverse attributes. It is at the same time conservative and ultra modern and has a rich history with interesting architectural buildings. It is a cosy Alpine town and also a global city of international flavour. It has a magnificent lake and is surrounded by the Alps and Jura, so summer and winter are busy seasons. Buy a Swiss army knife and tackle the great outdoors or simply indulge and gorge on some quality chocolate.
You will love that the city almost has two faces. Indeed, Geneva could be the original "tale of two cities"!
