Hanover (or Hannover), located in northern Germany, is the capital of Lower Saxony. A major commercial city, perched on the river Leine, Hanover has national importance due to its strategic position at the crossing point of railways and Autobahnen (motorways) which connect to various parts of mainland Europe. Hanover is especially famous for its zoo which is deemed one of the most spectacular and best in Europe, featuring many themed "areas"., so a holiday in Hanover can be very relaxing and laid back. The Hanover Fairground is the largest exhibition centre in the world with the Hermes Tower and EXPO roof, which is the largest wooden roof in the world. The Altstadt or Old Town has immense appeal as the narrow lanes and meandering streets of this ancient part of Hanover are strikingly picturesque and very quaint indeed. Despite heaving bombing in WW11, much of the area has been restored and some of the red brick Gothic buildings originate in the 15th century. For a touch of culture, the Sprengel Museum is held in high regard. Home to some famous works of art with international significance, the building itself is superbly designed.
