The lady of light and loveliness, Nice is certainly the shining beacon of the French Riviera.
An iconic symbol of French chic, the city is modern, bustling and vibrant. The commercial hub of the glorious Cote d'Azur, Nice is both a strong business town and a tourist retreat. Its greatest landmark is probably the lovely Promenade des Anglais, a long, palm-lined stretch of walkway which flanks the pebble beach, dominated by the illustrious presence of the highly acclaimed Hotel Negresco.
As a city break destination, Nice seems to have it all. There is superb shopping on Avenue Jean Medecin (Galeries Lafayette); a flower market in Cours Saleya, La Vieille Ville with meandering cobbled streets full of great bistros and local brasseries and a pedestrianised area where al fresco dining and people watching are honed to perfection. Nice is extremely rich in culture also with many wonderful art galleries and fine museums.
Strategically located on the Riviera, the nearby resorts of Cannes, Antibes and Juan-les-Pins are easily accessible and the fairytale Kingdom of Monaco (think Grimaldi Palace and the casino of Monte Carlo) is only a short train journey away.
The stunningly gorgeous villages of the "Back Country" like Mougins, Grasse and St Paul de Vence are perfectly picturesque and worthy of a little detour from the city. Nice will not disappoint and the sightseeing opportunities are endless. Overlooking Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels), the scenic views driving along the Corniches are really spectacular.
Lovely architecture, a large soupcon of international flavour, streetside brasseries galore and the blue and white striped bunting on the seafront are all intrinsic ingredients of Nice which come together like the perfect salade Nicoise!
Aer Lingus operates direct flights from Ireland to Nice all year round.
