Destinations / Italy / Sicily / Syracuse

A trip to Syracuse (or Siracusa) in Sicily means a sojourn in history combined with all the best features of a modern holiday resort. Located on the south eastern coast of Sicily (south of Catania), Syracuse is world renowned for having defeated the mighty city of Athens (in 413 BC) and was the most important city of Magna Graecia. Also the home of Archimedes (the Greek mathematician and leading scientist in classical antiquity), Syracuse was once the largest city in the ancient world.

A UNESCO World heritage site, holidays in Syracuse today capture timeless beauty with fabulous Greek ruins and essential aspects of the modern world on the other hand. Steep yourself in history, but people watch from the pretty piazzas cluttered with cafes to experience life in today's city of Syracuse. Busy and bustling with traffic, discover markets where the locals bargain for the best produce or simply stroll throught the narrow streets and laneways to explore this lovely city.

Enjoy the blue waters of the Mediterranean on a holiday in Syracuse and sailing, scuba diving and swimming are all popular pastimes as are cycling, hiking and walking, so outdoor pursuits are top of the agenda. The beaches of Fontane Bianche and Aranella are both excellent with soft white sand and safe swimming. The island of Ortygia (accessed by a footbridge from mainland Syracuse) is a must on any holiday to Syracuse as it is only 1 klm long and it affords wonderful opportunities to wander amongst the medieval monuments, then relax in one of the many local trattorias, bars or cafes and watch the sun go down.

Subjects to in Sicily generally and Syracuse holidays particularly have a real mix of old and new. Anyone interested in archaeology will adore a holiday break in Syracuse as history seeps through the very walls. But don't be fooled as the 21st century is here too. The attractive promenade, Foto Italica, is a focal point for evening strolls and there are plenty of nightclubs (where you can dance on the sand!), so Syracuse is certainly no museum piece!

There are no flights into Syracuse, but there are direct flights from Dublin to Catania and we provide a selection of accommodation in Syracuse and in other resorts in Sicily.
