A very popular resort on the shores of beautiful Lake Garda, Desenzano is a lovely, laid back and totally relaxing town. One of the larger resorts on the Lake, Desenzano has a population of approx 20,000 inhabitants, so the town has plenty of commercial buzz with lots of good stores, tourist shops, bars, cafes and good restaurants.
Desenzano is very well located as it is situated almost midway between Milan and Venice and the direct flights with Aer Lingus from Dublin to Verona serve the area admirably. On the south west corner of the lake, there are plenty of sightseeing options and some lovely day trips can be undertaken as Lombardy is well worth exploring. The towering peaks of the Alps loom in the background, so the dramatic landscape provides wonderful vistas.
This Italian Lake Garda resort was once a Roman trading point, but Desenzano then became a stronghold for the Venetians who used it as a power base to control the lake. Lovely historic nuances add atmosphere and traces of architectural glory are much in evidence. At the Old Port, the pretty bridge over the entrance to the small harbour is lovely and perfect for early evening strolls.
