Destinations / Ski, Lakes & Mountains / Zell am See (Austria)
Zell am See has such a romantic ring to it and, happily, it is actually one of the prettiest ski resorts in all Austria. Stunningly beautiful both summer and winter, there is however, an alluring fairytale air to the town when it is covered in a shimmering blanket of crisp snow, so Zell am See ski holidays can be truly magical.
Austria's Zell am See enjoys a wonderful situation sloping right down to the sides of the lake and, surrounded by mountains, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking. Once only a small market town, when the railway was built in 1928, the town grew and its importance was felt as a potential tourist resort. Lake Zell is renowned for its sparkling waters, (clean enough to be used as drinking water!) and the air is clean and clear, thus Zell am See is a climatic spa since 1961. So, skiing and good health can run hand in hand here.
Subjects to in Zell am See are like experiencing a winter wonderland as Lake Zell freezes over in winter, so this facilitates ice skating and curling. The town itself is postcard picturesque with its atmospheric narrow streets, cobbled surfaces and pedestrian area with many pavement cafes, quirky shops and local restaurants. Cosy wine bars and plenty of apres ski venues for lively nightlife options are also available.
The local mountain, Mount Schmittenhohe (2,000m high) is the main focus and there are great red and blue runs; in addition, the top of Kaprun glacier provides superb opportunities. The ultra modern cable car (designed by Porsche) provides the bird's eye views and access to the summit.
There are no direct flights to Zell am See, but Aer Lingus operates direct flights to Munich and we have a variety of accommodation in this very pretty resort.
