Destinations / Spain / Costa Calida, Region de Murcia / Los Alcazares

Los Alcazares holidays are dedicated to relaxing and enjoyment. The resort of Los Alcazares is situated on the shores of the Mar Menor (Small Sea) on Spain's Costa Calida or Warm Coast in the south east of the country.

This coastal spa town has the authentic feel of an old turn of the century spa resort and is truly attractive with the lovely buildings which were constructed by the Arabs when they enjoyed their own holidays in this place. "Al Kazar" means "palace" or "house of nobles" and Los Alcazares is the Arabic derivation of the name today. The marvellous therapeutic qualities of the waters of the Mar Menor were discovered by the Moors and they actually used the ancient Roman baths here. When Christianity arrived in Los Alcazares, the importance of the spa shifted and the town relied more heavily on fishing and tourism.

Part of the Moorish legacy, Los Alcazares has a wonderful medieval market as it celebrates Berber fiestas to remember its colourful past when the Berber pirates came to conquer in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Los Alcazares has an excellent strategic situation between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean and is therefore perfectly placed for all manner of nautical pursuits. The maritime pleasures of sailing, kayaking, windsurfing, kitesurfing and waterskiing top the daytime agenda and golf is also popular. Subjects to in Los Alcazares boast 7 klms of sandy coastline from Los Narejos to Punta Brava, so local tourism has always been a big boost to the economy. Latterly, northern Europeans are discovering the delights of holidays in Los Alcazares as the typical restaurants provide superb fresh seafood and local specialities and the traditional bars are full of ambience.

Los Alcazares is located just 24 klms from Cartagena. so there is plenty of opportunity for an interesting day out to this historical city. Also, if you tire of the endless sun, sea and sand on offer, the surrounding countryside has lots of sleepy hamlets and villages worth exploring.
