Destinations / Spain / Costa Calida, Region de Murcia / San Javier
San Javier is a modern resort town, located on the lovely Costa Calida (Warm Coast - what better incentive to visit!) on Spain's eastern flank, lapping the shores of Mar Menor, Europe's largest saltwater lagoon. A holiday in San Javier therefore benefits from two seas with Mar Menor (Small Sea) on one side and the balmy waters of the Mediterranean on the other, so you'll be spoilt for choice with many watersports and leisure opportunities.
San Javier holidays centre around a very pretty seafront (and great sandy beaches, naturally - Santiago de la Ribeira is superb), but more importantly, the town manages to hold on to that delightful fishing hamlet feel that makes it at once local, but intrinsically attractive to tourists. The Spaniards themselves like to holiday in the area (always a good sign and a great indication that food will be excellent!), but slowly, San Javier is being discovered as a holiday destination that is much more than just sea and sand.
The many inland villages and sleepy hamlets close to San Javier offer a glimpse of rural life in Spain that remains largely untouched by tourism. Situated about 8 klms from Cabezo Gordo (Fat Hillock!), this is a wonderful natural park area, ideal for climbing and hiking. Also, the delightful city of Cartagena is only 26 klms from San Javier, so provides the chance for another day out.
San Javier has an annual Jazz Festival (in July), a lively local market every Thursday morning and an interesting museum (Museo de San Javier) full of artefacts and local lore. Dos Mares Shopping Mall also fits the bill for souvenir hunting.
There are direct flights from Ireland to Murcia San Javier and ClickandGo offers accommodation in the area.
