Costa de Almeria
A bustling port city on the Mediterranean coast of Spain with a colourful past, defined by Moorish invaders, a famous 60s pop idol and countless A-list movie stars - a city break to Almeria is a fascinating experience.
Subjects to in Almeria will appeal to film and history buffs in equal measure. The history of this Andalucian town is synonymous with an imposing fortress - the Alcazaba - which overlooks the whitewashed houses of the old Medina on the steep hillside below. Once a Moorish stronghold, this impressive citadel can be spotted in blockbuster films, such as Bond's Never Say Never Again, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Conan the Barbarian.
Scenes from Lawrence of Arabia were shot in 'La Tabernas' desert to the north, along with countless spaghetti westerns, such as For a Few Dollars More, starring Clint Eastwood. Another surprising name to have spent time in Almeria is John Lennon, who is rumoured to have first begun wearing his iconic sunglasses and to have penned lyrics to Beatle's tune Strawberry Fields Forever while filming How I Won the War here in 1966.
As well as these fascinating Hollywood connections, the nearby beach resort of Roquetas de Mar is a popular tourist draw. Fill up on history, sample authentic Spanish delicacies in Casa Puga (one of the city's oldest tapas bars), then head to the coast to experience the breath-taking landscape of Andalucia's largest protected coastal area.
We offer a selection of hotels on the Almeria coast and cheap flights from Dublin - so why not follow in the footsteps of Hollywood legends and tread the medieval streets where Sean Connery dodged bullets from Arab infidels and Harrison Ford fled pursuers in that famous tank scene!
