Destinations / Spain / Costa de Almeria / Mojacar
Subjects to in Mojacar promise to be captivating. The allure of this delightful village and resort has been a well guarded secret for ages, but the word is now out! Mojacar is located in the southeast of the Province of Almeria in southern Spain, just 90 klms from the state capital, Almeria and the airport.
Blessed with a Mediterranean climate and low annual rainfall, Mojacar holidays are perfect for sunseekers and it's definitely the destination for utter relaxation in idyllic surroundings. Mojacar has 4,000 years of history and was invaded many times, but it's still true to its Moorish past. A traditional "white" town perched on a rocky hillside, the old village of Mojacar is a magnificent mishmash of meandering narrow paved streets, sugar cube houses and jutting balconies overflowing with scarlet hibiscus, coral bougainvillea and carmine geraniums. Broad plazas for the evening "rambla", lovely local architecture and the dramatic presence of Iglesia Santa Maria guarantee a truly atmospheric and picturesque destination.
Mojacar "pueblo" (where the locals live) and the coastal resort, Mojacar "playa", about 2 klms downhill is where the holidaymaker comes to play! The typical shops, tourist stores and large variety of restaurants cater admirably to the international visitor. Mojacar actually has a 17 klm stretch of golden sandy beach all along Costa de Almeria. Some beaches are virtually untouched and pristine whilst others have plenty of infrastrusture and are suitable for families and watersports enthusiasts. Two excellent 18 hole golf courses, Marinas Golf (great sea views) and the more challenging Playa Macenas Golf Resort should keep any prospective little "Rory" happy.
Just imagine a balmy night eating delicious tapas on a candlelit terrace, redolent with romantic ambience and Mojacar holidays immediately spring to mind. The symbol of Mojacar, the "Indalo" - a man holding a rainbow above his head - is the lucky totem of Mojacar and is said to have emanated from a prehistoric cave drawing. Buy the totem as a charm and perhaps it will bring the good luck to re-visit Mojacar again..... Not the usual Spanish holiday resort, Mojacar is all the better for being individual and less spoiled. However, there are plenty of good shops, nice pubs and lots of fine restaurants, so boredom is not an option!
There are no direct flights to Mojacar, but there are regular flights from Ireland to Almeria during the summer months. ClickandGo offers a selection of accommodation in the area.
