Destinations / USA / Florida Gulf Coast / St Petersburgh beach
A holiday in St. Petersburg Beach, or St. Pete's as it is locally known, is really suited to all ages and tastes. A seemingly endless stretch of dazzling white sand is lapped by the twinkling blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico on its western fringe with Tampa Bay lying to the east.
Scarcely 90 minutes drive from the heat and excitement of Orlando with all its theme parks and funky attractions, the calm and relaxing air in St. Petersburg Beach is a welcome retreat. Don't fret however as St. Pete's can be very lively in season, so boredom is definitely not an option here! Beach lounging, dabbling in some gentle watersports or wandering around a few local shops or designer outlets are the major draws, but golf is also popular and there are some amusement parks if you suffer withdrawal symptoms after the thrills of Disney and Universal.
There is a wonderful art museum dedicated to the works of the surrealist artist, Salvador Dali, located a short distance from the resort and it really is worth the excursion. Art lovers will equally love the impressive Museum of Modern Art and the St. Petersburg Sunken Gardens have an amazing array of over 5,000 plants and exotic species of birds and animals.
However, powdery silver sand, crystalline waters and warm sunshine are the ingredients most sought after in St. Pete's and the resort overall is relaxing, fun, friendly and atmospheric. Nightlife is buzzing around the resort, so there are plenty of lively bars, good restaurants and live music venues.
Subjects to on the Gulf Coast are the perfect way to avail of a fabulous two centre holiday as the magic and excitement of Orlando's theme parks provide the perfect foil to a laid back break on a gorgeous beach - an absolutely heavenly combination.
