Murcia is located in southeastern Spain and is a delightful destination for a city break. The pleasures of Mar Menor, Europe's largest lagoon, is about 30 miles away and worth a little detour for the reputed theraputic waters.
Murcia is a University city, so student life ensures a great vibe and youthful bustle, not to talk of the creative and cultural element that a young population brings. The Old Town is very atmospheric and pedestrian friendly with narrow meandering streets, tall buildings and quaint shops and local cafes.
Pride of place in Murcia city is the highly ornate Cathedral with its eclectic mix of architectural styles from Spanish Baroque, Renaissance, Neoclassical and Rococco to Gothic. Dominating the Plaza Cardinal Belluga, the Cathedral is a real show stopper. Renowned for fabulous festivals and local fiestas, Murcia hosts a Holy Week procession which is amongst the most famous in all Spain. Equally well known and quirky is the Burial of the Sardine festival!
An inland city, Murcia is beside the Segura River and the region is often referred to as Europe's Orchard because agriculture is very important here and the range of fresh produce (tomatoes, grapes, fruit and flowers) is superb. Not only exported all over Europe, Murcia naturally benefits as local cuisine is delicious. Be sure to try the local grape too as Jumilla wines are excellent.
If family members get itchy feet, the marvellous theme parks of Terra Natura (two zoo and aqua parks) and Terra Mitica (Egypt, Rome and Greece themed park with breathtaking rides and spectacles) are both located close to Benidorm and are great fun days out.
